When Is the Best Time to Landscape in Columbia, Missouri?

One of the most common questions I get from homeowners in Columbia is: “When should I start my landscaping project?” The answer depends on what you’re doing — but here’s the honest breakdown for central Missouri.

Spring (March – May): Prime Planting Season

Spring is the sweet spot for most landscaping work in Columbia. The soil warms up, rain is consistent, and plants have an entire growing season ahead of them to establish roots.

Best for:

  • New plantings (trees, shrubs, perennials)
  • Flower bed creation and redesign
  • Sod installation
  • Garden bed edging
  • Mulch refresh

I recommend booking your spring consultation in February or early March. The schedule fills fast once the ground thaws.

Summer (June – August): Hardscaping Season

Missouri summers are hot, and that’s actually an advantage for certain projects. The ground is dry and stable — ideal conditions for building things.

Best for:

  • Paver walkways and patios
  • Fire pit installations
  • Retaining walls
  • Raised garden beds
  • Gravel and rock work

One thing I always tell clients: don’t plant during a July heat wave. New plants struggle in extreme heat. Hardscaping, though? Summer is perfect.

Fall (September – November): The Underrated Season

Fall is one of the best times to landscape in Columbia — and most people don’t realize it. The soil is still warm, the air is cooler, and plants have time to establish roots before winter.

Best for:

  • Tree and shrub planting
  • Native landscape installations
  • Overseeding lawns
  • Fall cleanup and bed prep
  • Rain garden installation

Fall plantings often outperform spring plantings because the roots develop through the mild winter months.

Winter (December – February): Planning Time

Not much goes in the ground during a Missouri winter, but this is the best time to plan. I offer free consultations year-round, and winter is a great time to design your project without the pressure of the growing season.

Best for:

  • Free consultations and property walk-throughs
  • Design planning
  • Scheduling spring projects

The Real Answer

The best time to landscape is when you’re ready to start the conversation. Every season has its advantages, and I’ll help you figure out the right timing for your specific project.

Schedule a free consultation and let’s talk about your yard — whatever the season.
